Daniel Hurst was born 18th March 1896 (Newmarket Q2-1896 3B:512), baptised in Cheveley in 1900,son of George and Mary Ann HURST (née WHYBROW).

1901 census...Aged 5 he was at Broomstick Corner, Cheveley with his father George HURST [42] a shepherd; his mother Mary Ann [42]; sisters Elizabeth [16] and Marjorie [10 months] and brothers Harry [14] farm labourer, Joseph [11], George W.[9]and Edward [7]. All except his Moulton born mother were born in Cheveley.

1911 census...Aged 15, a farm labourer, he was at Broomstick Corner with his parents and brothers George and Edward, both farm labourers, and Arthur [9] born in Cheveley. One child had died.

His parents later moved to Green Farm, Hildersham, Cambridge.


He enlisted in Bury St. Edmunds.
The Suffolks only had two battalions engaged in the fighting on the 1st day of the Somme, 1st July 1916. They were the 8th and 11th. The 8th however were not called upon for the attack and were employed mainly in carrying materials and ammunition up to the front line.In consequence they only lost around 20 men. However they wwere soon more heavily engaged. By the 28th they were consolidating the captured Zollern trench. That day they left 2 companies to hold the trench and set out to try and take Bulgar and Schwaben Redoubt. Bulgar was quickly taken but resistance then became harder and it was 14:30 before they carried the Schwaben Redoubt. Their casualties in these ventures were around 200 but only had 16 killed on the 28th September 1916. The next day they were taken by bus to billets in Forceville.
